Jointly Offered Seminar
This seminar will be offering through as a joint offering between CanBoat Nanaimo and Latitude Sailing. The seminar instructor is Lyle Wetsch, the owner/instructor at Latitude Sailing as well as the Communications Officer with CanBoat Nanaimo where he has served on the bridge since 2021.
It is being offered as a complimentary training session as the importance of boater safety is a priority for both CanBoat Nanaimo and Latitude Sailing.
All sessions will be delivered via YouTube Live in 4K resolution from 7pm - 9pm Pacific and all sessions will be recorded. Registered users will be able to access the content following the session for review or to catch up on the content that they have missed.
What is Covered?
Navigating around British Columbia in some areas can provide challenges with currents, tides, anchoring, weather, etc. This seminar will go though a detailed step-by-step process of the tools, online resources, books, apps, and software that is available to help you be comfortable with your planning (both pre-trip and while underway).
This 4 part seminar will be presented by Lyle Wetsch of CanBoat Nanaimo and Latitude Sailing.
What is Being Covered?
The upcoming seminar will be delivered once per week over 4 weeks virtually via YouTube Live. Each week you will cover the tools and resources and will be provided with a practical planning exercise to take away and work on before the next session allowing you to put your theory into practice.
MARCH 9, 2026:
- Preliminary planning using Canadian Government Resources, Local Guidebooks, planning templates, online resources and mobile apps.
MARCH 16, 2026:
- Electronic planning using Garmin Boating (formerly Navionics) and Orca.
MARCH 23, 2026:
- Electronic planning using Aqua Map and other planning tools such as Predict Wind & Predict Current, Windy, etc.
MARCH 30, 2026:
- Manual planning using paper charts pre-departure and while underway.
What's Included?
As part of this seminar you will be provided with a temporary license for Aqua Map software with access to the Chart Product and Advanced Tools subscription. You will also have access to detailed recorded tutorial videos on many of the software tools that are being utilized.
